The concert of the first lady of Czech songwriting, Dagmar Voňková, and the acclaimed musician Adela Mede, with an enchanting combination of folklore, minimalism, and powerful lyrics.
"Whenever a new direction in music was named, they’d put me into that box, but it never really fit," Dagmar Voňková revealed in an interview. The box where she might feel at home could be for those who don't fit anywhere else – the loners, the experimenters, the eccentrics, and the artistic daredevils in the best sense of the word. All those who possess the great gift of not copying anyone and who walk, run, or stumble along their own paths.
The language of her lyrics, the way she sings, her melody creation, and her overall approach to songs combine the wild roots of Czech folk art with untamed playfulness and a spirit of discovery. Dagmar Voňková can play the guitar in a hundred ways, and you’ll never feel self-serving or exhibitionistic in her playing; everything is strictly subordinated to the atmosphere of the song. The same goes for her singing – it can be terrifyingly threatening or the gentlest caress, and the words in her mouth take on weight, their meaning changing and deepening with many shades. Today, her concerts are inseparable from songs inspired by nature, compositions dedicated to trees, mountains, water, and air, inspired by long walks around her house in Pyšely.
Slovak-Hungarian musician Adela Mede explores the relationship between voice, technology, and field recordings. She sings in three languages – Hungarian, Slovak, and English. In her compositions, intimate ambient narratives with a spiritual dimension are accompanied by experimental electronics influenced by a range of styles, from minimalism to Central European folklore. The voice is a central element in her work; it is dominant, takes center stage, and expresses a universal language through which she describes a reality that transcends our individual experiences. Adela Mede often performs a cappella.
Adela studied popular music at Goldsmiths University in London. Her confident debut Szabadság (Freedom) gained attention in 2022 from influential magazines such as The Wire, The Quietus, and Foxy Digitalis. Her second album, Ne Lépj a Virágra (Don't Step on the Flower, 2023), also received international acclaim. She has performed across Europe alongside Claire Rousay, the Dialect project, Martyna Basta, and shared the stage with Lucrecia Dalt, Grand River, The Havels, and others.
