Alexandra Grimal REWILD (FR/US/GB/PT) • Mušhuššu

A star-studded supergroup led by French saxophonist Alexandra Grimal, featuring a legend of the world music avant-garde — British guitarist Fred Frith — alongside American drummer Gerry Hemingway, Portuguese trumpeter Susana Santos Silva, and French guitarist Marc Ducret. Czech premiere and the only concert in the Czech Republic. The evening will be opened by the duo Mušhuššu. A musical highlight of Divadlo 29’s spring season!

REWILD
is a brand-new ensemble formed by French saxophonist and composer Alexandra Grimal, who invited a true first-rate figure to the project — British guitarist Fred Frith. As one of the key figures in defining alternative rock (with Henry Cow and Art Bears at the core of the Rock in Opposition movement), Frith also helped shape free improvisation, co-founded the power-rock band Massacre with Bill Laswell, and played in John Zorn’s free-jazz whirlwind Naked City. Other members of REWILD include the renowned American drummer Gerry Hemingway, known for his long-term collaborations with Anthony Braxton, Cecil Taylor, and John Cale; French guitar wizard Marc Ducret, who bridges experimental rock and jazz; and Portuguese trumpeter Susana Santos Silva, a prominent figure on today’s European jazz, improvisation, and experimental scenes.

REWILD is a musical ensemble that resists aesthetic classification. Standing at a crossroads where contemporary jazz, new music, experiment, and improvisation meet, the group brings together a unique constellation of musicians, each contributing their own scores specially written for this ensemble. The result is a constantly shifting musical landscape that promises a truly singular listening experience.

Mušhuššu is a mythical creature — a hybrid of an eagle and a lion, the pet of the Babylonian god Marduk — and also an improvising duo formed by members of the radical improvisation band Stratocluster, known for its strong multimedia and performative interventions. In Mušhuššu, Mikuláš Mrva and Luan Gonçalves focus on the post-processing of the double bass, which they capture in various ways, further expanding the already vast world of sound possibilities of the acoustic instrument itself. The physical gestures of double-bass playing sometimes disappear beneath the sheer volume of sampled loops, only to re-emerge moments later as part of a dialogic duet. They then recede again, leaving space for another statement by the bow and low frequencies, which — in our electronic age — reveal further layers of the Babylonian monster.
