From Otázky Václava Moravce to the Age of Algorithms – A Debate with Václav Moravec
The discussion will focus on the current state of Czech society, the atmosphere in the public sphere, and the condition of domestic politics in a time of growing uncertainty, economic pressure, and declining public trust in institutions. Topics will include social polarization, the quality of political culture, the role of public service media, and the changing relationship between politicians, journalists, and citizens.
The conversation will also reflect on the situation surrounding Czech Television, pressures on public service media, and the broader debate about their independence and future. It will also touch on Moravec’s personal experience and the circumstances surrounding his departure from Czech Television, including changes in the media landscape and the boundaries of public debate today.
Václav Moravec will offer his perspective on the development of Czech politics, the state of democratic culture, and whether Czech society is still capable of maintaining meaningful dialogue without emotions, marketing, and oversimplification. The discussion will also serve as a reflection on where the Czech Republic is heading and what role the media, public institutions, and civic responsibility play in this process.
Václav Moravec is a Czech journalist, commentator, and university lecturer closely associated with Czech Television and political journalism. For more than two decades, he hosted the political discussion programme Otázky Václava Moravce, which became one of the most prominent platforms for public debate in the Czech Republic. He also created and hosted Fokus Václava Moravce and teaches at the Institute of Formal and Applied Linguistics at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics of Charles University. Throughout his career, he has focused on political culture, public service media, democracy, and transformations of the public sphere. He is considered one of the most distinctive figures of Czech television journalism of the past two decades.
In spring 2026, after more than 21 years, he announced his departure from Czech Television. He explained his decision as stemming from concerns about maintaining the independence of editorial work and the possibility of critical reflection within a public service media environment.
The debate will be held in Czech. Questions in English are welcome.
