Seba Kayan: Scales of Knowledge (AT)
Vienna-based musician Seba Kayan, who has Kurdish roots, combines Middle Eastern musical traditions with experimental techno and acid. Her performance at the Galerie města Pardubic (GAMPA) is part of the wider opening programme of the fourth edition of the Matter of Art biennial, taking place from 11 to 14 June 2026 in Prague and Pardubice. More information about the full programme can be found at matterof.art.
For Seba Kayan, the dancefloor is a place for cultural exploration and sonic experimentation. As an artist, DJ, producer and lecturer at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, she approaches club culture as a space where sounds of diasporas and decolonial perspectives meet. Drawing on her Kurdish heritage, she moves beyond the framework of Western musical tradition. In her work, she asks how memory, power relations and cultural hierarchies are inscribed in sound. Her presentation within the Matter of Art biennial is part of a long-term research project into how electronic music has been shaped by Eurocentric ideas of scales and sound. Every musical system emerges from a specific culture and history. What is taught in European music theory as neutral or universal is only one of many possible approaches, while other musical cultures work with entirely different scales, rhythms and understandings of time. Seba Kayan uses the club environment to challenge these assumptions and open space for other ways of listening and knowing.
The event takes place at the City Gallery Pardubice (GAMPA).
