Jan Kulka + Stratocluster ft. Emilio Gordoa (MEX) & Josten Myburgh (AUS)

The Czechoslovak Pavilion, installed as part of the Cecoslovacchia exhibition at the Gallery of the City of Pardubice, will transform into a riverbed of lights, shadows, sounds, and silences. Light wizard Jan Kulka will perform alongside the Prague-based ensemble Stratocluster in a series of projection–sound situations inside (and outside) the Venice–Pardubice pavilion. Joining the band for this special concert are Mexican percussionist Emilio Gordoa and Josten Myburgh, saxophonist and composer from Boorloo, Australia.

Expect something from Dream House (La Monte Young), something from Dream Machine (Brion Gysin), something from Dreamtime (Australian mythology)—but above all, a unique cluster and collision of sounds, lights, and spaces within spaces, architectures within architecture. This will also be the very last opportunity to experience the unique pavilion installation from the Venice Biennale at GAMPA before its deinstallation.

Jan Kulka is an experimental filmmaker and inventor focused on live film performances with projection devices of his own making. Through his work he seeks his own answer to the question: what is film? What unique qualities can analog technology still bring today? Jan strives to strip film of everything inessential, leaving only its singular, pure essence. He does not aim to tell personal stories through film but understands it as a light-and-sound phenomenon that speaks directly to our sensory core. Film projection becomes a ritual reanimation of the primordial denominator once shared in caves as we collectively gazed into the flames of fire.

With his projection devices, Jan has been traveling for over a decade—from remote Czech barns to major European festivals from Riga to Madrid—and has performed at the renowned IFFR in Rotterdam. Today he primarily works with his specially developed audiovisual machine called the Pramítačka, which he will also use in this performance in Pardubice.

Stratocluster is a Prague-based improvisation ensemble focused on multimedia creation. Since its founding in 2013, the group has released several albums on labels such as Meteorismo and Polí5. The band has also engaged in a number of creative collaborations—for example with shakuhachi player John Kaizan Neptune, Dutch composer Samuel Vriezen, and American researcher in artificial intelligence and improvised music Ritwik Banerji.

Emilio Gordoa is a Mexican composer, vibraphonist, and percussionist. His scope spans sound art, experimental music, noise, free jazz, improvisation, and contemporary composition. He works with the vibraphone in unconventional ways, employing preparations, extended techniques, and electronic instruments. He composes graphic scores for ensembles of various sizes, as well as for theatre, documentary film, and audiovisual works. He has collaborated with artists such as German Bringas, John Russell, Tristan Honsinger, John Butcher, John Edwards, Misha Marks, Axel Dörner, Tony Buck, Tobias Delius, Ute Wassermann, and many others.

Josten Myburgh is a composer and saxophonist from Boorloo (Perth), Western Australia. His work encompasses field recordings, free improvisation, and experimental composition, often combining elements of these approaches. Josten has developed a highly original style of alto saxophone playing, incorporating microtonal tunings, extremely quiet dynamics, multiphonics, and modal melodic approaches inspired by diverse traditions of music. He is also active as an organizer, serving as artistic director of the Audible Edge festival and the concert series Tone List.
