Tobias Delius – one of the most original European saxophonists and clarinetists of today – performs in a trio with the phenomenal Hungarian rhythm section. Their only concert outside Prague! The opening set will be performed by the new formation Huullaakaz, featuring a double setup of drums and wind instruments.

Tobias Delius / Szilveszter Miklós / Péter Ajtai
(GB/HU)

The only non-Prague concert of the trio led by one of the most original European saxophonists and clarinetists of today, Tobias Delius, joined by the phenomenal Hungarian rhythm section of drummer Szilveszter Miklós and double bassist Péter Ajtai. The trio is characterized not only by its virtuosity and mutual empathy between players, but also by the ability to create music that sounds completely unexpected yet utterly natural. Their music is constantly in motion – focused, joyful, and always searching for beauty within the elusive moment.

Respected and acclaimed saxophonist Tobias Delius was born in Oxford, England, but has spent most of his life in the Netherlands, Mexico, and Germany, where he currently resides. His domain is both traditional and free improvisation. He was a member of the legendary Instant Composers Pool led by Misha Mengelberg, as well as the wind supergroup Available Jelly. Over his career, he has collaborated with musicians such as Steve Lacy, Louis Moholo, Bill Frisell, Hamid Drake, Axel Dörner, Han Bennink, Joe Williamson, and Christian Lillinger. His playing style, with its full-bodied tone, refers to the bebop tradition, yet his phrasing, harmonic volatility, and rhythmic conception are entirely original and contemporary.

Drummer Szilveszter Miklós is one of the key figures on Budapest’s free jazz and improvisation scene, and has also gained recognition on the wider European improvised music stage. Originally trained as a violinist, he was later captivated by percussion. Despite his relatively young age, he has performed with numerous musicians from the European and global improvised scene, including Ken Vandermark, Han Bennink, Matija Schellander, and Alexander von Schlippenbach. In 2020, he released an LP with the legendary free jazz saxophonist Peter Brötzmann. He is a member of the Budapest-based power jazz trio JÜ and the quartet of István Grencsó.

Bassist Péter Ajtai belongs to the radical young generation of jazz musicians who reject convention while maintaining the highest level of musicianship. After studying classical and jazz double bass at the conservatory and later at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music, he became an active figure on Budapest’s jazz and improvisation scene. He regularly collaborates with musicians such as Béla Ágoston, István Grencsó, Mihály Dresch, and Akosh Szelevényi, and internationally with Frank London, Lewis Jordan, and Johannes Bauer.
