Satan Kingdom Babylon

Satan Kingdom Babylon is a new experimental documentary by Petr and Marie Šprincl that provokes and assaults all the senses. A fictional detective guides viewers through a mosaic of authentic footage and interviews with sect leaders while investigating the disappearance of a girl in a desert hotel at the end of the world. His search takes him deep into the circles of the Ku Klux Klan, Black Israelites, and other conspiratorial and religious movements of Trump’s America. The end is here.

Marie and Petr Šprincl began their artistic collaboration during their studies in the Intermedia Studio of Václav Stratil at FaVU in Brno and today form a distinctive creative duo with a highly recognizable signature. Their work is marked by a disquieting poetics, drawing on the darker sides of reality as well as on their use of 8mm film stock and VHS technology. The specific features of these recording media—especially the visual glitches caused by wear or disruption of their structure—are materialized, aestheticized, even fetishized. Their audiovisual practice is further enriched by a dense iconography that transcends the medium of moving image, finding expression in their creative platform Flesh&Brain. Balancing on the boundary between fiction, documentary, and experiment, their work consistently probes the various social faces of evil—often concealed beneath the thin surface of everyday life. They are the authors of the trilogy Moravia, Beautiful Land (2015–2019), Vienna Calling (2018), and now the 2024 film Satan Kingdom Babylon.
