Double bassist Robert Balzar ranks among the most important Czech jazz bassists alongside Jaromír Honzák. Both can be seen as part of the lineage of the renowned Czech bass school, represented internationally by legendary players such as George Mraz and Miroslav Vitouš. In addition to leading his own trio, Balzar is well known for his collaborations with leading Czech vocalists including Dan Bárta, Yvonne Sanchez, and Hana Hegerová. Over the years, he has also worked with numerous prominent names on the Czech and international jazz scene, including Emil Viklický, Karel Růžička, Wynton Marsalis, John Abercrombie, Benny Bailey, Tony Lakatos, and many others. He is also a member of Dan Bárta’s group Illustratosphere and the funk ensemble J.A.R.

The current lineup of the Robert Balzar Trio features the phenomenal pianist Vít Křišťan and outstanding Brno-based drummer Kamil Slezák. The trio’s music captures a fresh, contemporary sound shaped by three seasoned musicians working as one organic whole. Most of the repertoire consists of new material being prepared for an upcoming album set to be released this spring. Their music honors the core principles of jazz—melody, rhythmic precision, and interplay—while following the modern wave of global jazz, where the boundaries between jazz, pop, and film music are increasingly blurred.
