Příběhy nesvobody v současném Rusku (Stories of Unfreedom in Today’s Russia)

A discussion about the fate of Russian political prisoners.

What is life like for democratically minded people in Russia? How is Putin’s regime tightening its grip, and where does authoritarianism become totalitarianism? Values such as democracy and freedom stand in frightening contrast to the reality of today’s Russia. The personal stories of modern political prisoners testify to the ongoing violations of basic human rights.

The discussion will focus on the state of freedom and the violation of human rights in Russia, featuring Miroslav Karas, a longtime foreign correspondent for Czech Television, and Alexandra Skorvid from Gulag.cz, who studies the cases of current Russian political prisoners. The talk will be moderated by Štěpán Černoušek, director of Gulag.cz.

he event accompanies the exhibition Putinova klec (Putin’s Cage), on view in Pardubice (Třída Míru) from October 28 to November 26, 2025. Through artistic illustrations, the exhibition presents ten selected cases of political prisoners convicted in Russia for opposing the aggression against Ukraine and other crimes of the current Russian government.

Visitors will also have the opportunity to write letters of support to those unjustly imprisoned by the Russian regime. All necessary information will be provided on site, along with help translating the messages.

The discussion will take place primarily in Czech.
