MAOMAH • Pourparler (Angélica Castelló & Isabelle Duthoit) (MX/FR)

Angélica Castelló and Isabelle Duthoit, two prominent figures in contemporary music, come together in the joint project Pourparler & the MAOMAH string quartet in an expanded lineup. We can expect fragile miniatures, monumental sonic exchanges, and a musical army fighting for mystery and hope.

Pourparler is a project where two stars of the global experimental scene, Angélica Castelló and Isabelle Duthoit, join forces. Pourparler features intense instrumental and vocal dialogues brought to the stage, documenting an imaginary sound diary. Acoustic music born from the spirit of electronics; electronic music reflecting acoustic worlds. Fragile miniatures, monumental sonic exchanges, titanic sinusoidal structures, and weightless songs of air.

Angélica Castelló is a composer and sound artist. Her work explores fragility, dreamlike worlds, and the unconscious. She performs solo or collaborates with other artists between Mexico City and Vienna. She has created a number of compositions for various ensembles, radio programs, and installations, where music, performance, and visual art intertwine. Her recordings have been released on labels such as Interstellar Records, Mikroton Recordings, Monotype Records, and Mosz. She has collaborated with Jérôme Noetinger, Billy Roisz, Burkhard Stangl, Dieb13, and Bruno Duplant.

French clarinetist and vocal performer Isabelle Duthoit captivates with her intensely emotional and impulsive stage presence. Isabelle has worked with prominent figures in the French improvisation scene, including Phil Minton, Franz Hautzinger, John Butcher, Lionel Marchetti. She performs clarinet in the trio Krizda, in the duo SunDog (with eRikm), and increasingly collaborates with protagonists of the Austrian scene.

Originally a string quartet, MAOMAH has now expanded to include saxophone and trombone. It is a relatively new musical ensemble, whose members are united by a shared approach to improvisation at the intersection of acoustic jazz and contemporary classical music. In this approach, classical virtuosity, improvisational invention, and natural musicality blend together equally.

The group MAOMAH, founded by double bassist Klára Pudláková as part of her master's project at the Prague HAMU, presents itself as a musical army fighting for mystery and hope. It's difficult to say exactly what "musical mystery" means, but perhaps it is in its eternal incomprehension that the hope remains—that music will always be with us and for us. MAOMAH seeks this mystery by all available means. They are not afraid to extract emotions in the most direct way, nor to freely rage and experiment. Every expression, dynamic, and tectonics of the whole does not follow notation but the mutual reaction of the musicians here and now.

The ensemble can maintain the boundaries of harmony and rhythm but is equally unafraid to completely break these boundaries. MAOMAH released their debut album Platoon of Love in 2024 on the Prague label Ma Records.
