Kyšperský-Pilgr-Doubrava-Nikl
Martin Kyšperský and Aleš Pilgr from the band Květy, Marek Doubrava of Hm…, together with visual artist and performer Petr Nikl, will present their collaborative album Chunta at D29.
The Kyšperský–Pilgr–Doubrava–Nikl project emerged as a meeting of four distinctive figures of the Czech alternative scene, connected by long-standing affinity, mutual inspiration, and an openness to interdisciplinary collaboration. Martin Kyšperský and Aleš Pilgr (Květy), Marek Doubrava (Hm…), and visual artist, performer, and musician Petr Nikl created the album Chunta without pre-prepared material, without a fixed goal, and without defined roles. The core of the recording was developed over several days at a cottage near Jimramov, where the quartet lived, cooked, and above all improvised together. The creative process was based on immediate response, sharing, and intuitive decision-making: lyrics were written alongside the music, melodies emerged over unfinished texts, and individual contributions naturally intertwined.
Chunta is a collective organism without a dominant leader. The role of frontperson shifts depending on situation, mood, and theme, and each track brings a different authorial perspective. The result is a “fourfold blend” where contrasts and harmonies, playfulness and tension, individual expression and shared energy meet. The album features twelve tracks oscillating between intimacy and exaggeration, between corporeality and existential anxiety. The lyrics work with imagery, absurdity, and subtle fragility; alongside themes of love, memory, and the body, there are also hints of decay and inner unrest. Poetry naturally intertwines with grotesque elements, lightness with weight.
Musically, the project is open and stylistically unanchored. Alongside traditional instrumentation, less common sounds appear—banjo, harmonica, bisernica, bouzouki, autoharp, or waterphone—expanding the palette and supporting the playful character of the recording. The tracks bring together elements of rock, folk, electronics, and experimentation.
Martin Kyšperský is the frontman of the Brno-based band Květy. He has also been active in bands such as Čvachtavý lachtan and Mucha, collaborated as a lyricist with Lenka Dusilová, and composes music for theatre, radio, and film. He occasionally works as a film and television actor.
Aleš Pilgr plays drums, percussion, and bass in Květy. He has been or continues to be active in bands such as Biorchestr and Ty syčáci. Alongside music, he is involved in science communication.
Marek Doubrava is a founding member of the band Hm…, which sets texts of Czech and world poetry to music, and performs with Jan Muchow & The Antagonists. In the past, he played in Tata Bojs, frequently collaborates with theatre (Minor Theatre, Dejvické Theatre, Palác Akropolis, Theatre DVA, and the National Theatre), and composed music for the films Čertí brko and Prvok, Šampón, Tečka a Karel.
Petr Nikl is a musician, writer, visual artist, and theatre-maker. He was a member of the artistic group Tvrdohlaví, and his works are held in the collections of many major galleries. He is a recipient of the Jindřich Chalupecký Award, the Magnesia Litera, and many other honors.
