Kee Avil (CA) • Aran Epochal / Aran Satan

Futuristic sound design crawling like squeezed gel. Vocals deeply intimate and intensely unsettling, like an alien life form flexing its mandibles. Acclaimed Canadian musician Kee Avil in D29. The support act will feature the last cowboy with an acoustic bass guitar in the dual incarnation Aran Epochal / Aran Satan.

When the Montreal-based musician Kee Avil released her debut Crease on the cult label Constellation in 2022, it sparked an enthusiastic wave of responses worldwide. Some compared her fragile yet urgent mix of avant-pop, deconstruction and experimental folk to a futuristic version of PJ Harvey, while others found connections between her bold electronic production and artists such as Björk, Lucrecia Dalt or hyperpop producer Sophie. “As if Juana Molina met Autechre.”

Yet Kee Avil’s music largely resists such shortcuts. It is too distinctive for that. Various poetic descriptions get closer to the subtle, sonically adventurous and darkly-tinged songwriting beneath the surface: “Deeply intimate and intensely unsettling… like an alien lifeform flexing its mandibles,” wrote Uncut. The magazine The Quietus praised the restrained intensity of Kee Avil’s second album with the words: “Spine simmers, sashaying close to eruption. Sounds worm around like squeezed gel.” Bandcamp Daily described her music as “A whispered secret of grave importance.”

Kee Avil is currently releasing her album-sound diary Vapor (NNA Tapes) gradually throughout this year, with the songs appearing one by one as they are created. At the moment she is touring across Europe as a trio with a drummer and a sound engineer (how else in her case), and will also perform at the renowned Rewire festival in The Hague. Thanks to this tour, we have a rare opportunity to experience the urgent intensity of her music live in D29.

Aran Epochal. One of the driving forces behind the Silver Rocket label, a giant from the band Gnu. The last cowboy with an acoustic bass guitar, sparing with every word, whose songs lead fairy-tale characters to disappear into dark forests. “The introverted, reflective lyrical impressions and the humbly sounding melodies of AE flow freely, passing by without imposing themselves. They avoid both singer-songwriter conventions and the need for an explicit message, acting more as therapy, self-clarification, a search for form and place. Songs that paradoxically do not call for attention but instead keep running further away from people. Into their own world, away from the city; perhaps that is why the best Aran Epochal concert I have seen so far was not in a club but in a former quarry in the middle of a forest,” reads one review of the one-man project Aran Epochal. In recent years it has increasingly intertwined with the more dynamic and aggressive alter ego Aran Satan. The natural development has led to the merging of these two musical faces – and that will also be the case at the Pardubice concert. It is also worth mentioning that the new Aran Satan album Konspirace will be released later this spring.
