JÜ (HU) • Mankurt
The Budapest-based trio JÜ will appear in Pardubice for the first time, bringing their gripping psychedelic avant-jazz infused with elements of thrash metal and ecstatic hardcore rock. Support will be provided by the garage-mathcore duo Mankurt from Neratov.
The music of JÜ can be described as a free-spirited psychedelic avant-jazz colliding with thrash metal and ecstatic hardcore rock. Their work draws on influences ranging from John Coltrane, Sonny Sharrock, Last Exit, King Crimson, to John Zorn and his project Naked City. By interweaving experimental jazz, world music and rock, pioneering electronics, and ancient folklore, they create a vividly pulsating and deeply compelling whole.
Formed in the spring of 2012, the band quickly built a strong reputation in Hungary and abroad thanks to their highly energetic live shows. Each member of JÜ is a distinctive figure on the Budapest music scene. Alongside dozens of Hungarian projects, they have collaborated with internationally renowned musicians such as John Zorn, Eugene Chadbourne, Peter Brötzmann, Charles Gayle, Chris Potter, William Parker, Hamid Drake, Pamelia Kurstin, Ken Vandermark, and Mikołaj Trzaska. For a longer period, the band also worked with Norwegian saxophonist Kjetil Møster (known, among others, from Mats Gustafsson’s band The End). The result of this collaboration was the album JÜ Meets Møster (2014), which seeks to melt the boundaries between free jazz and hellishly distorted, hardcore-soaked rock. The album was mixed by the legendary Bill Laswell and mastered by Michael Fossenkemper. Since then, JÜ have released three more studio albums (the most recent, Rudel, came out in 2025 on the Budapest label BMC Records) and have travelled a considerable musical distance—moving toward the inclusion of dense ambient layers within raw hardcore passages, blending frenetic free jazz with the pulse of Eastern European rhythms, and fusing crushingly hypnotic textures with Asian influences such as Indonesian gamelan music.
Ádám Mészáros – guitar / Ernö Hock – bass / Szilveszter Miklós – drums
Mankurt is a duo delivering an eclectic, fiery mix of garage mathcore, metal, and noise rock. The band consists of guitarist Alš (ex-Ambiopia, ex-Deprivant) and drummer Viklef, known for example from the duo Lionel Dixit, from the village of Neratov near Lázně Bohdaneč. In January, the band released the lathe-cut Bizárium Doktora Pardubitze as a genre detour ahead of their upcoming album.
