Jan Burian

Jan Burian is often described as a písníčkář, though he himself feels the term has lost its meaning today; he finds “singing poet” more accurate. He inherited his talent—he comes from an artistic family whose lineage continues in the work of his children. “I spent half my life as the son of E. F. Burian, and now I’ll spend the other half as the father of Kapitán Demo,” he sums up the genetic makeup of the Burian family with dry humour.

Since 1970, musician and singer Jan Burian has performed at more than 4,000 concerts—mostly solo with piano, though occasionally with various bands. He has collaborated with Jiří Dědeček, Petr Skoumal, and Daniel Fikejz, among others. He has released a number of solo song albums; his debut Hodina duchů (1989) has gone through four editions. Other albums focus on the fates of women (Dívčí válka, 2006) or on the imperfections of men (Muži jsou křehcí, 2007). With Bizarre Band he released the double album Jihotaje (2017), and with Jan Burian Band the album První láska (2020). In 2024 he released two new records: Dobrý sen! made together with his son Jiří, and the acoustic album V horečce.

Jan Burian is also an author of feuilletons, poetry, and travel-inspired books. In 2012 he published a monograph about his father titled Nežádoucí návraty E. F. Buriana, and in 2021 a memoir Co jsem nezapomněl aneb Z deníku potulného písničkáře. He founded the loose association Osamělí písničkáři. For radio he created, among other things, the series Moji hrdinové v písních and the programme Na sever!, focused on Scandinavian culture. On television he hosts shows such as Posezení s Janem Burianem andBurianův den žen, and several times a year he guides tours to Iceland, Portugal, Chile, and other countries. He also collaborates with filmmaker Pavel Koutecký on documentaries such as Chilský deník, Islandská paměť, and Žít jako Dán.
