Handa Gote: Misky (Bowls)
DIY playfulness, gentle humor, and a distinctive sense of nostalgia. Handa Gote return with their new performance Misky (Bowls) — a journey through a world of empty vessels waiting to be filled: with food, light, sound, or life itself. The sounds of gamelan and Loreto bells accompany the faltering steps of nameless heroes as they wander into darkness or become trapped in the loop of routine actions.
The main expressive medium of the project is sound, intertwined with light and minimalist action, during which the protagonists strive for impossible goals only to freeze again in the static poses of clockwork figures. Funeral urns, bowls for feeding rabbits, camping mess tins, Tibetan singing bowls, and tsukubai hand-washing basins together form a sonic and luminous system, activated by stick strikes or by algorithmic triggers.
In Misky, we witness a kind of psychedelic clockwork, where secular figures pass by, adopting certain traits of traditional saints or functioning as “non-playing characters” (NPCs) — inhabitants without will, populating the vast worlds of modern video games. The protagonists spin the squirrel wheels of their peculiar labors until they collapse from exhaustion. The beggar’s bowl fills up. With this project, the group returns to its beginnings, when it experimented with cryptic stage compositions.

Handa Gote Research & Development explores radical dramaturgy and minimalist scenography, integrating non-theatrical elements into its work while developing its own concept of post-dramatic theatre. The group draws long-term inspiration from science and technology as well as from folklore, traditional cultures, and craftsmanship. It conducts continuous research into theatrical language and laboratory work in sound and light design, while maintaining a critical perspective on these disciplines. From 2019 to 2026, the ensemble is a resident company at Alfred ve dvoře Theatre.
Performance Language: Non-verbal.
