Europe Between Putin and Trump / Lecture by Věra Jourová
Věra Jourová’s lecture will focus on how Europe can withstand pressure from authoritarian regimes as well as the uncertainty of transatlantic relations. How can European values, media freedom, and the rule of law be protected in an era of disinformation and hybrid threats? How can unity among EU member states be strengthened while maintaining a strong partnership with the United States? And is it possible for the European Union to become a confident geopolitical actor that is not “in between,” but acts from its own position of strength?
Věra Jourová will offer a perspective from the highest levels of European politics and open a discussion on the future of Europe in a time of global tension, great power rivalry, and the transformation of the democratic world.
Věra Jourová is a Czech politician and Member of the European Parliament, and one of the most prominent Czech figures on the European political stage. From 2014 to 2024, she served as a member of the European Commission, where she was responsible for justice, consumer protection, values, and transparency. From 2019 to 2024, she held the position of Vice-President of the European Commission for Values and Transparency.
The lecture will be held in Czech; questions in English are welcome.
