Chvilky naděje (Million Moments)

A film about two friends – and a crowded Letná. In 2019, nearly three hundred thousand people gathered on Prague’s Letná to protest against the prime minister, the president, and above all, in defence of democracy. From the stage, two students spoke to the crowd, expressing their concerns about the future of the Czech Republic. This unique film about Mikuláš Minář and Benjamin Roll reveals the gripping story of the founders of Milion chvilek pro demokracii (A Million Moments for Democracy). 

Director Amálie Kovářová spent six years filming behind the scenes of the civic movement that stood behind the largest protest since theSametová revoluce (Velvet Revolution). The movement experienced success and decline, enthusiasm and fatigue, adoration and disappointment – and Mik and Ben lived through it all. Two young men who believed that even in difficult times, hope can prevail.

Milion chvilek pro demokracii (A Million Moments for Democracy) is a non-profit organisation focused on promoting democratic values, civic engagement, and open public dialogue in the Czech Republic.

Amálie Kovářová studied film directing at FAMO v Písku. After graduation, she worked for the Akademie věd ČR (Czech Academy of Sciences), creating short documentaries, reports, and promotional videos. In January 2018, she began filming her first footage from demonstrations and soon came across the appeal Chvilka pro Andreje (A Moment for Andrej). She emailed Mikuláš Minář, met him the following day, and that very same day became a member of the newly emerging Milion chvilek pro demokracii movement. This gave her unique access to the organisation’s core and to the personal stories of its founders. In autumn 2022, she decided to leave the movement to gain a certain distance while completing the film. The project was selected for the prestigious DOK.Incubator workshop, which provided consultations with leading international experts. Chvilky naděje (Million Moments) is her feature-length debut.
