CecoslovacchiaLive ➛ Drť (SK) • XCES (SK)

A concert by two outstanding Slovak music projects. This evening marks the Czech premiere of Drôtenky, the new program by the band Drť, known for oscillating between alternative rock and free jazz with touches of cabaret. Also performing is XCES, whose intense, expressive, and emotionally charged post-genre set pushes sonic and performative boundaries.

The concert is part of the summer series CecoslovacchiaLive, hosted by Divadlo 29 & GAMPA, focusing on contemporary Slovak artists and musicians.

Drť was founded in 2019 by composer and musician Miroslav Tóth. The band's style spans multiple genres—from punk and alternative rock to free jazz. Their four studio albums stand out not only musically but also thematically: each engages with controversial or traumatic political and social events from recent Slovak history. Their album Puntičkár was based on transcripts of interviews with former communist secret service general Alojz Lorenc; Minister incorporated scandalous recordings of conversations between oligarch Marián Kočner, ex-minister Ján Počiatek, and prosecutor Dobroslav Trnka. The album Kruh alebo spirála?, created in collaboration with writer and publicist Fedor Gál, reflects on individual and collective Slovak experiences from the end of WWII to the present day.

In 2023, Drť underwent a lineup change and developed a new live set and forthcoming album titled Drôtenky. The work explores verbal violence and women's positions in contemporary Slovak society, through lyrics written and performed by poet and new frontwoman Zuzana Husárová.

XCES is the solo project of composer and performer tOmO, focused on creating intense, expressive, and emotionally charged post-genre music and multimedia. His solo set is built around a distinctive and idiosyncratic vocal performance—ranging from singing and rap to screaming and various extended vocal techniques. This is complemented by an eclectic array of instruments and effects controlled through hardware and virtual reality interfaces.
