Bezčasí – haiku kojící matky (Timelessness – Haiku of a Nursing Mother)

An author reading by Olga Škochová Bláhová with musical accompaniment by Štěpán Škoch, who improvises on wind and percussion instruments using a sampler.

The project Bezčasí (Timelessness) is based on the poetry collection of the same name, written in the immediate aftermath of the birth of the author’s second son in 2005–2006, within the everyday rhythm of caring for two small children. The short poems were originally written on square pieces of paper and assembled into several-metre-long strips, reminiscent of traditional Japanese poetry books. They were published in book form only seventeen years later, in autumn 2023, by Pavel Mervart Publishing, in a graphic design inspired by the original handwritten notes.

With gentle humour and existential urgency, the texts capture experiences of motherhood, exhaustion, love, and a gradual return to the outside world. The collection contributes to the discussion on the social isolation of parents, especially women on parental leave. The author closely examines images of parenthood that are far removed from schematic notions of motherhood or the common idea of automatic happiness often associated with becoming a parent.
