Lecture by Igor Lukeš: America in the 21st Century – The Search for Identity.

Prof. PhDr. Igor Lukeš, Ph.D., M.A.L.D., is a Czech historian who has lived in the United States since the 1970s. Since 2005, he has served as the Honorary Consul of the Czech Republic for the states of Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Maine, and Vermont.

Igor Lukeš studied English and philosophy at Charles University in Prague, where he earned his PhDr. degree in 1976. In the late 1970s, he emigrated to the United States. He received his Ph.D. from Tufts University in 1985. In the early 1980s, he worked in Washington, D.C., before returning to academia in 1985, initially as an assistant professor at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy. Since 1986, he has been a professor of history and international relations at the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University, focusing on the history and politics of Central and Eastern Europe and contemporary Russia. Since the same year, he has also been affiliated with the Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies at Harvard University, and he is active at Harvard's Minda de Gunzburg Center for European Studies.

He was a member of the Academic Council of the Institute for the Study of Totalitarian Regimes but resigned in protest against the dismissal of the institute's director, Daniel Herman, which he described as having been carried out “through lies and as a result of a conspiracy.” Igor Lukeš also regularly contributes to Czech newspapers and magazines.
