PROJECTINTERMEZZO 2022/2023 April 8, 2022 – April 16, 2023

INTERMEZZO: FAREWELLSBOHEM A PŘÍHRÁDEK: April 12 – April 16, 2023

In 2021, GAMPA concluded a three-year cycle that used exhibitions and other projects to consider possible interpretations of the terms resilience (2019), relativity (2020), and revolution (2021). The motto for 2022/2023 is intermezzo.

We can understand the intermezzo as a planned activity or pause intentionally “inserted” into life or work, connected perhaps to a need for rest, the necessity of transformation, change, and escaping established tracks and the everyday; linked to overcoming a feeling of being unfulfilled; to a desire to help, move forward in life, or take part in something new. It is a form that is part of a larger whole but can also operate in itself. As part of a broader whole, the intermezzo often relates to the past – that which has taken place; which has been experienced –, but it also anticipates future working principles.

[cooperation] |care| <slowdown> –overlaps– {education}

With the Intermezzo project, GAMPA concludes its tenure in the Baroque spaces of the former granary on what’s known as the Příhrádek (By-Castle) in Pardubice. The next phase will take place in the newly developed spaces in the Automatic Mills complex, which are to be completed in early 2023. We therefore view the season 2022/2023 as a conscious connection from the past to the future; space for time and revision.

CAN WE HELP YOU?

curators: Jakub Adamec, Martina Johnová

projects: Andreas Gajdošík: Artists' Community Service | Marika Smreková: Studio of Inclusive Culture | Nikola Brabcová: Water Lily Tea | Denisa Langrová: Research and Living in Interspecies Utopias | Hana Kokšalová: Atelier of the Future

What if there were a form of art that were not created primarily as a physical art work, instead representing the result of collaboration with a specific social group or community? During the pandemic, artists created and provided aid, stepping out of their enclosed studios and institutions towards the public; towards real life. Through this year-long cycle, our aim is to transfer this experience into the post-pandemic period, including groups in a process (creative; social) of therapy or in attempts to understand and thematise the problems of particular social classes. The selected artists, depending on their skills and capabilities, can help with various activities: from using a sowing machine, through garden work, babysitting, cleaning, cooking, all the way to small repairs and home improvements or caring for animals, as well as listening or various forms of working with the body.

This practice, which exists at a scale of 1:1, has a double ontological status. These activities are “this and that”; art and life; performance and everyday work; both an artistic and a political process. We would like to evoke the ideas of the Pakistani artist and activist Rasheed Araeen, who believes that “artists are gifted with a certain imagination and have the power to initiate processes useful for various communities” and the work of American artist Mierle Laderman Ukeles, who practices an art of care for her immediate environment and natural surroundings. In 1969, Ukeles published her Manifesto for Maintenance Art 1969!, which begins with the following statement: “I am an artist. I am a woman. I am a wife. I am a mother (random order). I do a hell of a lot of washing, cleaning, cooking, renewing, supporting, preserving, etc. Also, (up to now separately) I “do” art. Now, I will simply do these maintenance everyday things, and flush them up to consciousness, exhibit them, as Art […] MY WORKING WILL BE THE WORK.”

BY THE WAY

curator: Lucie Váchová

projects: Martin Zet: Místa, kde člověk porušil zemský povrch, aby to, co nalezne, použil | Habima Fuchs: Mirroring of the Still Standing Sun | Lukáš Gavlovský: Up the Elbe | Lucie Králíková: Pilgrimage Adlergebirge | Adam Vačkář: Flapping Wings |

We can see the path as a way of intensely connecting our inner self, but we also often set out on it just like that, without a deeper meaning, with the aim of simply disappearing, wandering about outside, getting lost far away from people, doing something unusual. The projects of these five artists – Lukáš Gavlovský, Habima Fuchs, Martin Zet, Adam Vačkář, and Lucie Králíková – are also often created in relation to roads or walking through the landscape. Part of their symbolic pilgrimages, journeys, and common “escapes” are various experiments, work with natural materials, land art or conceptual methodologies, and ecological appeals. They are created intentional and partly by the way, as secondary outputs of the journeying. The journey itself can often serve as an intentional pause, a step out of our established routines. At other times, unexpected coincidences enter the scene, changing the intended form of the journey. One of the ways of stepping out of the stereotype of everyday reality can be a journey connected to anticipated adventure, to a feeling of freedom, and to the search for new impulses. On the one hand, today, in a world of global mobility, we see journeys as a means to rest, but more and more of us urgently realise the necessity of renewing our relationship and sensitivity to the landscape; to revive walking or aimless wandering; to awaken our sensitivity to the non-human world. Movement through an open space becomes an opportunity to express our respect for the landscape, to experience joy. But in parallel to that, it also serves to revive or discover new rituals and experiences, to search for paths not only to nature but also to ourselves and to others, to those with whom we can experience and share our voyage.

AMALGATING LAYERS

curators: Lukáš Jirřička & Matyáš Dlab, Šárka Zahálková

projects: Michał Salwiński: The Dream in a Supermarket | Pavel Novotný: To the Machines! | Final_Final | Skupina Pyl (Terén) & Janneke van den Putten: Sunrise to Sunrise | Allan Affichard: The Tribology Series | Cristina Maldonado: The School of Magical Giving |

The conception prepared by the Terén platform for GAMPA is a fundamental fulfilment of an entry into public space that takes place in various forms of collaboration, not only between artists and the gallery but also between artists and the public; the spectators. Terén’s curatorial gesture aims to propose sensitive inputs to public spaces, often based on a sensitised perception of one’s surroundings; focused walks through the city, gentle and non-violent interventions in the environment of the city and the gallery through physical action; presence and collaboration that is intensified both aesthetically and interpersonally. The aim is to use the simplest possible means to magnify and divert phenomena, things, and processes experienced as quotidian by acknowledging their artistic charge, or instead assaulting them outright with fiction; imagination; the subversive desire to offer a different reading of what is considered known and given, shifting the common roles and functions of everything we can think of. Pardubice, given their architecture and demographics, can become an ideal stage for such events.

The artist Lucie Králíková planned the journey through the Eagle Mountains not only as a journey through the landscape at the border of our country, but at the same time she perceives it as an opportunity to honor places, nature and regions that are seemingly on the fringes of the attention and interest of the general public. The pilgrimage will be a tribute to the "edge" of the country, to people who once had to leave their homes and to those living here outside the big centers. At least for a while and symbolically, they will try to revive the often forgotten and slowly decaying church buildings, to which believers and pilgrims used to go.
