Piemule a Starověrci (Piemule and Old Believers)
A sensitive double portrait of communities existing on the margins of time and outside the mainstream of history. Two award-winning mid-length documentaries by director Jana Ševčíková return to cinema screens after many years in digitally remastered versions.
Piemule takes us to the Romanian Banat, where a Czech minority has preserved its language, traditions, and way of life across generations, despite isolation and historical upheavals. Starověrci (Old Believers) follows a community of Russian faithful who rejected church reforms and withdrew into isolation in the Danube Delta. Their everyday life is shaped by faith, ritual, and quiet continuity.
Both films are united by an attentive, respectful gaze and a contemplative rhythm in which the landscape becomes as important a presence as the people themselves. These are not explanatory documentaries, but films that let things unfold—inviting the viewer into a state of focused perception.
The remastered versions bring these now nearly inaccessible works back to the cinema, where they can live again both as portraits of disappearing cultures and as timeless reflections on identity, faith, and what endures.
Piemule
An ethnographic portrait of a Czech minority that settled in Romania near Timișoara in 1822. The film captures the life of an isolated community across four seasons, showing how it has preserved its language, identity, and cultural life under the difficult conditions of Ceaușescu’s regime.
Starověrci (Old Believers)
Filmed over five years, this documentary captures the life of a deeply religious community that has lived for centuries in the Danube Delta in Romania. The Old Believers are descendants of Russian faithful who rejected church reforms and withdrew into isolation. The film is above all about faith—as a daily act, a ritual, and a way of being.
