Pavel Matyska: Materiální hodnoty (Material Values)
Opening of an exhibition of paintings by Brno-based visual artist Pavel Matyska.
Pavel Matyska is among the distinctive representatives of the generation of painters shaped at the turn of the millennium at FaVU (Faculty of Fine Arts) of the Brno University of Technology. He studied in the painting studio led by the prominent figure of Czech figuration, Prof. Jiří Načeradský, whose pedagogical influence left a clear mark on an entire generation of artists – an emphasis on painterly sovereignty, work with the figure, corporeality and an existential undertone. Matyska, however, never adopted this experience literally; rather, he transformed it into a distinctive, ironically subversive and formally shifting painterly language.
In recent years he has been working with a strongly reduced palette, creating a sense of timelessness and opening space for returns to the past. Prehistoric motifs appear not as illustrations of history, but as metaphors for contemporary conflicts, aggression and patterns of power. He also works with pronounced textual elements, woven into the canvases sometimes subtly, sometimes in a dominant way.
Pavel Matyska (1977) graduated from FaVU in Brno in the studio of Jiří Načeradský. In his work he connects figuration with expressive shorthand, irony and the idea of the past as a mirror of the present. He works with a limited palette and archetypal motifs through which he reflects the social and cultural tensions of today. In addition to painting, he also works with comics and illustration.
The exhibition runs until 19 June 2026. Free entry.
