Pavel Klusák: Ženská práce (Women’s Work)

An evening about the lives of Nina Simone, Björk, Patti Smith and other musicians with Magnesia Litera award winner and music journalist Pavel Klusák. An energetic continuation of the book Ženská práce (Women’s Work) devoted to world-renowned singers and songwriters who changed both the music scene and society.

In this audiovisual programme, Pavel Klusák brings to life the music and stories of Nina Simone, Patti Smith, Björk, PJ Harvey, as well as Yoko Ono, Laurie Anderson and many others through an author’s reading expanded with projection, music and discussion. The book’s “history of pop told by women” can be read as a feminist statement, as an invitation to civic resistance, and as a deep dive into the remarkable music that accompanies our lives.

The book follows a successful podcast and connects music history with personal stories of courage, talent and resistance to stereotypes. Klusák traces how women asserted themselves in an environment long dominated by men and how their work pushed the boundaries of genres as well as public debate. Written in an essayistic yet highly readable style, the text presents music as a space of emancipation, self-expression and cultural change. Women’s Work is a book about creativity, strength and a voice that can no longer be ignored.

Pavel Klusák (*1969) is a music journalist focusing on contemporary music, particularly independent and experimental scenes. He has long been interested in the relationship between music and social and political developments. He has written for the magazines Týden, Respekt, Lidové noviny, HIS Voice and A2, collaborates with Czech Radio and curates listening programmes. In 2021 he published the book Gott: Československý příběh (Gott: A Czechoslovak Story), which received the Magnesia Litera award in two categories (journalism and book of the year). In 2024 he published Suchý & Šlitr: Semafor 1959–1969.
