Kateřina Šedá: Národní sbírka zlozvyků (National Collection of Bad Habits)

A discussion with Kateřina Šedá, the author of an encyclopedia of Czech bad habits.

Bad habits are something that accompany each of us throughout our lives. They set us apart from others, define and characterize our personalities, and paradoxically also connect us. We wish to inherit and pass on the best qualities, but the older we get, the clearer it becomes how many unwanted similarities our parents have left in us – just as we will one day leave them in our own children.

Národní sbírka zlozvyků (National Collection of Bad Habits) was created as a long-term artistic and research project mapping the everyday behavior of Czech society, and it exists both online and in book form. The website www.sbirkazlozvyku.cz and the publication itself focus on small, often overlooked bad habits that take place in private as well as in public space and that together form a precise, though not always flattering, picture of the national mentality.

Kateřina Šedá works with bad habits not only as humorous details, but also as a significant social phenomenon. She shows that repeated small behavioral patterns can reveal values, relationships, modes of communication, and the ways people perceive themselves and their surroundings. Národní sbírka zlozvyků thus functions as a distinctive archive of the present, situated at the intersection of art, social inquiry, and collective testimony.

Kateřina Šedá (*1977) is a Czech artist whose work moves between conceptual art, social experiment, and participatory projects. She has long been engaged with everyday life, interpersonal relationships, and the ways people share space and time. She often involves the general public in her projects and works with real social situations. Her works have been realized in the Czech Republic and abroad and have received numerous international awards. Kateřina Šedá represented the Czech Republic at the Venice Biennale, and her projects are part of major gallery and public collections. In her practice, she emphasizes process, communication, and the long-term impact of the artwork.

The discussion will be held in Czech.
